Training and Skills
|
| |
| Over the last several years, Total has deployed an ambitious training policy to continuously upgrade employee skills and knowledge to keep pace with changes in our internal and external environments. In 2006, employees devoted an average of 4.6 days to training, although there were sharp differences among regions: |
| • Europe: 3.6 days | | | • North America: 5.1 days | | • South America: 6.3 days | | | • Middle East: 5.4 days | | | • Asia: 7.2 days | | | • Africa: 8.9 days | |
32% of this time was spent on enhancing technological skills, 25% on industrial safety and 15% on language acquisition. Some 28% of training was more management-oriented. In recent years, Total has sharply increased the number of courses designed to accelerate the integration of new managers. Additionally, new programs, known as Graduate Schemes, have been introduced to facilitate the transition form university to the business world. Management education also includes modules to help employees become familiar with team management techniques, understand leadership issues and learn more about company strategy. Lastly, several seminars cover business ethics, the environment, industrial safety and community relations and outreach in areas impacted by our activities. These programs are designed to help instill Total's management culture across our organization. In 2006, they were attended by 3,200 people.
