Initiatives Outside France
| In a number of our host countries, inadequate infrastructure and precarious living conditions make it especially difficult for young people to pursue their education. Our commitment to hiring future facility managers locally has inspired several of our subsidiaries to set up local scholarship or financial support programs for students. |
In Angola, for example, where Total is the second-ranked international oil operator, producing 160,000 barrels a day, Total E&P Angola has funded almost 100 scholarships a year since 1995, for recipients studying in country, in Portugal or in South Africa. Total also finances the studies of around five petroleum engineering students a year at Universidade Agostinho Neto in Angola. The initiative, launched in 2003, has been renewed for a further five years. Our subsidiary Total Gabon will offer four scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year to Gabonese high school students interested in pursuing higher education at the Institut Supérieur de Technologie d’Afrique Centrale’s two campuses: - Undergraduate courses at the campus in Pointe Noire, Congo. - Graduate courses at the campus in Douala, Cameroon.
Scholarships were also awarded in Congo (Institut Supérieur Technique d’Afrique Centrale), Nigeria (Institute of Technology, Port Harcourt), Asia and the Middle East. In 2005, we extended our scholarship policy to Iraq. Subsidiaries also make direct awards of scholarships locally.
