Middle East: examples of scholarships and programs
The Middle East illustrates the wide array of educational programs and initiatives offered by Total.
 | Iraq |
Under an agreement with the Iraqi Oil Ministry to rebuild the country’s short, medium and long-term educational resources, Total has implemented a number of intensive training initiatives. Total employees who are members of Total Professeurs Associés (TPA) and Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP) instructors have provided training to nearly 300 people annually since October 2004. Four to five one-week sessions a year are held on various specialized technical topics in Amman, Jordan, for groups of 12 participants from the Oil Ministry.
At the same time, one three-month-long course a year is held at Total’s centers in Paris and Pau for Iraqi Oil Ministry engineers. Twelve people grouped by occupation—geologists, geophysicists, drilling engineers and production engineers—enroll in each session. Some of them extend their studies by completing our internal on-the-job training program for a further three months. Other, more customized management or human resources training has been provided at the Ministry’s request.
Lastly, in collaboration with the Jordanian University for Sciences and Technology (JUST) in Amman, Total Professeurs Associés provides five weeks of training each year in various technical disciplines to students from six Iraqi universities, to keep their technical knowledge current. The program enrolled 180 teachers in 2006. | United Arab Emirates |
Total is a partner in The Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi, alongside state-owned ADNOC. Created in 2000, the Institute delivers a five-year program offering instruction in oil industry disciplines to 150 UAE students a year. Every year, the Group also proposes two types of training programs for young students and ADNOC personnel:
One year scholarships to study for masters and doctoral degrees in France, at the Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP), Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Métiers (ENSAM), Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales du Nord (Edhec), HEC and other schools.
Internships in Total plants. Since 2000, more than 40 people from the UAE have gained hands-on experience at Feluy in Belgium and at Pau or in Paris in France.
Total’s contribution to skills transfer and continuing education takes a variety of forms. At the request of the Group’s partners in the Emirates, Total employees are seconded to ADNOC’s operating companies (OPCOs), for a period of three to five years. For 2007, 64 Group employees have been seconded to nine operating companies, Group employees can be assigned to work in the exploration and production or gas downstream segments for periods of a few days to several months. Continuing education for UAE professionals is also provided upon request, enabling geophysicists and geologists to take part in specialty studies conducted by the E&P branch.
Since 2001, Total Professeurs Associés has provided 15 days of instruction at the Petroleum Institute, the Higher College of Technology, the American University in Dubai and the American University of Sarjah. | Yemen |
In 2005, Total was selected to manage the Yemen LNG project to develop natural gas reserves in the Marib region. A liquefaction plant is scheduled to come on stream in early 2009. Five hundred people will operate the plant, 150 in Sana’a and 350 at the Bal Haf facility. Major skills upgrade needs are also being addressed.
An initial training plan was launched for that purpose in 2005. Approximately 250 Yemeni operators and technicians are taking an 18-month course combining intensive English instruction with a four-month theory refresher course, 12 months of liquefied natural gas training and a hands-on internship at Total’s industrial facilities.
Twenty Yemeni engineers have joined te project teams in Paris, London and Muscat (Sultanate of Oman).
In addition, the YLNG joint venture involving Total, which holds an interest of around 40%, and six other partners, plans to recruit 15 new graduates a year for three years. The new hires will be trained through Personal Development Plans (PDP) and mentoring. Similar programs have been carried out or are under way in Iran and Qatar. | Iran |
With the bringing on stream of Sirri A & E, South Pars 2 & 3 and Balal and the continuing development of the Dorood project, Total is the Iranian energy industry’s main partner. The development of South Pars prompted a massive program to train engineers and technicians from the national gas company. Its aim, in agreement with the Iranian government, was to pave the way for a transfer of production operations, prior to transferring full operational responsibility.
Sixty local instructors overseen by specialized Total personnel trained 766 Iranian employees selected by National Iranian Gas Company, of which 110 were its own managers and 656 were recently qualified engineers and technicians. Since 2002, Total Professeurs Associés has provided 100 days of instruction in oil technology and project management at the Sharif University of technology, the Petroleum University of Technology (PUT) and the University of Tehran. In addition, Total began awarding scholarships to students of these universities in 2004, to help them pursue masters, doctoral and MBA degrees at Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP), Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales du Nord (Edhec) and other schools.
Lastly, every year since 2002, Total has helped select 10 Iranian specialist physicians working on doctoral theses, placing them in French university hospital departments corresponding to their specialty, for a year of clinical practice and specialized training. | Syria |
Total E&P Syria trains Deir Ez Zor Petroleum Co. employees and has set up custom training courses for them. With partner ConocoPhillips, we placed particular emphasis on training several hundred Syrian engineers and technicians, thereby paving the way for a smooth transfer of the Deir Ez Zor gas plant operations to the Syrian Petroleum Company in early 2006.
Total is also involved in a number of partnerships between Syrian and French universities. One example is the agreement between Université Montesquieu-Bordeaux and the University of Damascus, where one of the aims is to help Syria to modernize its banking system via university training for bank personnel.
Lastly, Total has joined forces with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in a program to foster local business development by training business leaders at a dedicated training center in Deir Ez Zor.
  | Qatar |
Qatar kicked off the creation of its Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) in 2004. By providing a home for international technology companies, the park aims to share and disseminate scientific and technical knowledge and encourage small and medium-sized Qatari technology startups.
Active in Qatar for nearly 70 years, Total was one of the first companies to move into the QSTP. We will focus on new technology research and education, offering abundant training opportunities and support for local industries. We will operate a laboratory and office center of over 1,500 square meters and will invest more than $20 million over the next five years.
In 2004, Total began awarding scholarships to Qatar Petroleum employees and Qatar University students, mainly to pursue masters degrees at Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP). Total is also working towards the extension of its cooperation with Qatar Foundation to the area of education.
