Summer School Partnered by Chinese Universities in 2006

Nine Chinese students attended the first Total Summer School session in 2006. The participants were selected from the following flagship institutions: Tsinghua University, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Tongji University, South China University of Technology, Eastern China University of Science and Technology, Zheijang University, Wuhan University and Shanghai Jiaotong University

Following the Summer School session, Refining & Marketing and Total Petrochemicals arranged for the students to spend an extra week in Europe to visit various production facilities, such as the Total Petrochemicals plant in Gonfreville, the Les Flandres refinery in Dunkirk and the Feluy research center, bringing to life some of the topics discussed at the Summer School.

Partnership with the Sino-French Institute of Engineering & Management at Tongji University, Shanghai

Total is a member of the board of the Sino-French Institute of Management and Engineering (IFCIM) set up in Shanghai in 1999 by Tongji University and ParisTech, a network of leading French engineering schools and research institutes.

As part of our commitment, we support the Mastering Industrial Risks master’s program, jointly created in 2004 by Tongji University, Ecole des Mines de Paris and Ecole de Chimie de Paris. The first graduates were awarded their diplomas at Ecole des Mines de Paris in September 2006.

Total Sponsors Ecole Centrale in Beijing

In November 2006, Total signed a three-year agreement with Ecole Centrale in Paris to sponsor the new Ecole Centrale in Beijing, which grew out of a partnership between the Ecole Centrale campuses in Paris, Lille, Lyon and Nantes and the prestigious Beihang University in Beijing.

Total is deeply involved in developing the Beijing campus, contributing to the school’s strategy and activities, participating in course instruction, initiating a scientific cooperation agreement and providing financial support.

The first graduating class, which began courses in September 2005, had 107 students. Ultimately, the Beijing campus plans to train 300 students a year.

TPA has signed memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with China University of Petroleum – Beijing , Beijing University of Chemical Technology, China University of Geosciences, Xian University of Petroleum, Chengdu University of Technology, South China University of Technology, Guangdong University of Technology and Southwest Petroleum University .

Through TPA’s programs, Total China also maintains strong ties with other leading Chinese universities—Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Tongji University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Eastern China University of Science and Technology, Wuhan University and Zhejiang University.

Scholarships

Since 2004, Total China has provided financial support to ten high potential students to help them obtain a master’s degree in chemical, mechanical or industrial risk management engineering in France, through the n+i and ParisTech engineering school networks. Five students received scholarships in 2004, two in chemical engineering, two in mechanical engineering and one in industrial risk management; three in 2005, two in mechanical engineering and one in industrial risk management; and two in 2006, one in chemical engineering and one in industrial risk management.

  Total E&P Indonesia

Scholarships
Total E&P Indonesia has funded the education of more than 200 students through two scholarship programs for undergraduates:
- The Community Development Program, which has helped 100 scholarship students since 2000 and is managed in coordination with the regional authorities.
- The Domestic Scholarship Program (BSDN), set up in the mid-1990s and coordinated by the Oil and Gas Coordinating Body (BPMIGAS).
The programs are designed to enable young Indonesians with excellent academic potential to pursue post-secondary education, which will ultimately give them opportunities to find rewarding jobs.

The Community Development Program offers financial assistance to students from East Kalimantan to study at various universities in Indonesia, such as University of Gajah Mada in Yogyakarta, Brawijaya in Malang, and Atmajaya in Jakarta.
The main disciplines concerned are economics, English, social sciences and agriculture.
The students are selected by Total E&P Indonesia on the recommendation of the Association of Dayaks from East Kalimantan (PDKT).
In the 2005-2006 academic year, 150 students are taking part in the program.

The Domestic Scholarship Program (BSDN) is for students at various universities in East Kalimantan, including Universitas 17 Augustus 1945 Samarinda, Universitas Balikpapan, STIE Bulungan Tarakan and Universitas Tridharma in Balikpapan. The main disciplines concerned are economics, political and social science, law and agriculture.
In the 2005-2006 academic year, 124 students are taking part in the program.

Total E&P Indonesia’s Participation in the Total’s Graduate Scholarship Program in France
Starting in 2005, eight students from two leading Indonesian universities (University of Indonesia and Institute of Technology Bandung) benefit from Total’s graduate scholarship program, whose aim is to expand education opportunities and nurture closer ties with the future leaders of the country. Students from University of Gajah Mada will also receive scholarships in 2006. Under the program, young graduates are awarded scholarships to study in France in a variety of fields, such as engineering, business and economics, law, political science and communication.

Internships
Total E&P Indonesia offers internships as part of a program conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the local business community. The program forges ties between the world of education and the world of business. All graduates of a university in East Kalimantan, the students undergo a rigorous selection process.

Teaching and Exchanges at Universities
Managers from Total E&P Indonesia regularly make presentations at universities in Yogyakarta (University of Gajah Mada) and Jakarta (University of Indonesia) on Total and subjects related to our businesses.
As part of employee volunteer programs, Total E&P Indonesia employees offer two-hour lectures at universities in East Kalimantan (Balikpapan, Kutai Kartanegara) on general topics related to oil, the environment and the oil and gas industry.
Since 2002, Total Professeurs Associés (TPA) has organized a number of lectures at Total to share technical expertise with public universities (Institute of Technology Bandung, University of Indonesia, Surabaya Institute of Technology, University of Gajah Mada) and private universities (Trisakti University, National Development University).

Skills Transfer
Twenty-one students from Kutai Kartanegara Polytechnic in East Kalimantan took part in the first session of the on-the-job training program from April to October 2005. The program is open to young students about to start their first year of post-secondary education. It consists of six months of classroom studies at the Oil and Gas Academy in Java and six-month placements at Total E&P Indonesia, during which the students are supervised by a mentor and receive classroom and on-the-job training.
The students start their training with a three-month course covering oil and gas production techniques, energy conversion, and electrical energy. For their work placement, they are divided into three groups in line with their major and receive intensive classroom and on-the-job training in line with their discipline. The group working on oil and gas production techniques is monitored and assessed by production staff, while the others specialized in energy conversion and electrical energy are tracked and monitored by mechanical and electrical engineering staff from Total E&P Indonesia.

Total Summer School program
Total E&P Indonesia has selected six students from two leading Indonesian universities (Universitas Indonesia and the Bandung Institute of Technology) to take part in the Total Summer School. The one-week program will allow students to attend and take part in discussions of energy-related issues and challenges, alongside Total managers and experts from industry and research.

Cooperative Program
The cooperative program is a unique sustainable development initiative by Total E&P Indonesia that covers corporate social responsibility issues and commitments defined by the Group.
The co-op program is designed to enhance employment opportunities for talented local university students.
